Louisville, Kentucky – Drivers across south central Indiana and north central Kentucky have less than a few hours before light snow and freezing rain create slick stretches on untreated roads and elevated bridges, threatening the Monday morning commute through 10 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. EST Monday for portions of southern Indiana and east-central Kentucky. Forecasters report a coating to 1 inch of snow, mixed with sleet and pockets of freezing rain. A light glaze of ice may form on bridges, overpasses and other elevated surfaces.

The advisory includes Orange, Washington, Scott, Jefferson and Clark counties in Indiana, along with Oldham, Trimble, Henry, Shelby, Franklin, Scott, Harrison, Bourbon and Nicholas counties in Kentucky. Cities such as Jeffersonville, Madison, Scottsburg, Frankfort, Shelbyville and Georgetown could see brief bursts of wintry precipitation during peak travel hours.

Even minor ice accumulation can cause spinouts on I-64, I-65 and I-71, especially on ramps and overpasses. Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance and allow extra travel time. School delays remain possible in some districts.

Conditions should gradually improve after 10 a.m. as temperatures rise above freezing. Additional updates may be issued if slick spots persist beyond mid-morning.
