Lexington, KY – Residents across central Kentucky and parts of southern Indiana are being urged to prepare for dangerous cold conditions overnight as the National Weather Service issues a Cold Weather Advisory lasting into Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, the advisory will be in effect from 10 p.m. Monday through 10 a.m. EST Tuesday, with wind chills expected to drop to between 3 and 6 degrees below zero. Officials warn that frostbite and hypothermia can occur if skin is exposed to these temperatures without proper protection.

The advisory includes portions of southern Indiana, including Jefferson County, as well as east-central and north-central Kentucky. Impacted communities include Lexington, Frankfort, Georgetown, Versailles, Nicholasville, Paris, Winchester, Shelbyville, La Grange, Madison, Bedford, and Lawrenceburg.

Meteorologists say the coldest conditions are expected overnight through early Tuesday morning, when winds combine with already low temperatures to produce dangerous wind chills. Rural and open areas may feel even colder.

Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers, and cover exposed skin with hats and gloves. Pets should be brought indoors, and outdoor animals should have access to warm shelter. Drivers are encouraged to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles in case of breakdowns during the coldest hours.

Emergency officials also stress safe heating practices, reminding residents not to use grills or generators indoors and to ensure space heaters are operated properly.

Temperatures are expected to gradually improve later Tuesday morning, but officials emphasize that overnight conditions pose the greatest risk.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and heed all weather advisories as this Arctic air mass moves through the region.
