Paducah, KY – Another very cold night is expected across the Quad State region, with dangerous wind chills and increased fire safety concerns as residents rely on additional heating sources.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, overnight temperatures will fall into the single digits to teens, with wind chill values dropping into the single digits and briefly below zero by Monday morning. These conditions will be similar to, or slightly colder than, the previous night across western Kentucky, southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, and southwest Indiana.

Forecasters say wind chills across much of the region will range from -4 to 10 degrees by daybreak Monday, increasing the risk of cold-related illness and house fires due to alternate heating use.

The NWS is urging residents to take extra fire safety precautions, including:

  • Plugging only one alternate heat source into an outlet at a time
  • Never using extension cords or power strips with space heaters
  • Keeping heaters at least three feet away from anything flammable
  • Turning off heaters before sleeping or leaving a room
  • Never using gas stoves or outdoor grills to heat homes
  • Having chimneys professionally cleaned and inspected

Residents are also reminded to bring pets indoors, protect exposed pipes, and check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals.

Despite the cold night, forecasters say a warming trend begins Monday afternoon, with temperatures continuing to rise through midweek. Highs are expected to climb well above normal by Wednesday, before the next chance of rain arrives Wednesday night into Thursday.

Officials emphasize that while warmer weather is coming, Monday morning will still be dangerous, especially for early commuters and anyone spending extended time outdoors.
