Paducah, KY – A heat wave sweeping through Kentucky is expected to intensify by midweek, with heat indices surpassing 100 degrees across the region.
According to the US National Weather Service in Paducah, the heat index will remain between 95 and 100 degrees through Sunday. Following a brief reprieve on Monday due to a weak cold front, temperatures and humidity are forecasted to rise again on Tuesday and Wednesday. Heat indices are predicted to reach between 100 and 105 degrees, making Wednesday the hottest day.
The weather service warns that the heat index values in the middle 90s to around 100 degrees will persist through the weekend. The slight improvement on Monday is expected as a weak cold front passes through, bringing some relief with showers and thunderstorms. However, the return of hot and humid conditions will be swift, as a south to southwest wind flow brings back extreme heat by Tuesday and Wednesday.
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of extreme heat. Tips include staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, and checking on vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children.
