Louisville, Ky. – Heavy rain and the threat of flash flooding are prompting a Flood Watch across much of Kentucky through late Friday night, with more than 30 counties from Bowling Green to Lexington at risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms will continue into Friday evening, bringing torrential downpours capable of producing flash flooding. The Flood Watch is in effect until 3 a.m. EDT Saturday for counties including Fayette, Hardin, Warren, Grayson, and Barren.
Low-lying areas, creeks, and urban streets are especially vulnerable. Cities such as Louisville, Richmond, Elizabethtown, and Campbellsville could see multiple inches of rain fall in short bursts. Motorists are urged to avoid water-covered roads, and residents near streams or flood-prone spots should stay alert.
Localized rainfall totals may exceed 3 inches where storms repeatedly track. Emergency managers advise preparing now by charging devices, securing valuables in flood-prone basements, and delaying unnecessary travel during downpours.
This is the first significant flood risk of the spring season for much of the region. Additional watches or warnings could be issued tonight if rainfall intensifies.
Warnings remain possible through early Saturday.
