Kentucky Flood Warning: Red River at Clay City Remains at Moderate Flood Stage Until Tuesday

Clay City, KY – A flood warning has been extended for the Red River at Clay City, affecting Powell and Estill counties, with moderate flooding expected to continue until Tuesday evening. The National Weather Service issued the warning at 7:52 PM EDT on Friday, April 4, 2025.

According to the latest update, the river stage was recorded at 22.6 feet at 7:15 PM, approaching flood stage. The river is expected to rise to 22.9 feet just after midnight tonight. Although the river will recede on Saturday, it is forecast to rise again on Sunday into Monday before falling below flood stage by early Tuesday afternoon. The flood stage for the river is 17 feet.

Residents in and around Clay City are urged to take precautions as several roads remain impassable and homes along Main Street are inundated at the 23-foot mark. The National Weather Service has reminded the public to “turn around, don’t drown” when encountering flooded roads, especially at night when flood dangers are harder to recognize.
