Louisville, KY – As snow showers and freezing air sweep across the Bluegrass State this month, officials are warning drivers in Louisville, Lexington, and Bowling Green to be alert for bridges and overpasses icing over before main roadways.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), bridges freeze first because they’re surrounded by cold air on all sides, allowing heat to escape faster than from roads built on solid ground. “Even if the air temperature is just above freezing, bridges can already be slick,” the NWS said Friday.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) began pre-treating major routes including I-64, I-65, and I-75 as temperatures drop. Crews focus on high-risk areas — elevated bridges, ramps, and overpasses — where black ice forms most quickly.
Officials are urging motorists to slow down before bridges, avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and allow extra distance between vehicles. Even a thin layer of frost or sleet can cause cars to lose traction, especially during early morning and late-night travel.
