Louisville, KY – Flakes will soon be flying across the Ohio Valley as the first significant snow of December pushes through southern Indiana and central Kentucky later today. The National Weather Service in Louisville has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, warning residents to prepare for 1 to 3 inches of snow and hazardous travel conditions by early Friday morning.

Forecasters say snow will develop after 7 p.m. and continue into Friday morning, with the heaviest bands falling along and north of the I-64 corridor. Even modest totals could make roads slick during the morning commute, especially on bridges, ramps, and untreated surfaces. Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra braking distance, and avoid sudden stops as conditions worsen.

Meteorologists note this system — a fast-moving Alberta clipper — is part of a larger winter pattern that will bring another snow chance late Saturday night into Sunday morning. Behind it, the coldest air of the season will grip the region, sending temperatures plummeting into the single digits with wind chills between -10°F and -15°F early next week.

“Residents should plan now for icy roads and dangerously cold mornings,” forecasters warned, adding that spotters are encouraged to report snowfall totals to the National Weather Service.

Five-Day Outlook:

  • Friday: Morning snow tapering, high 39°F, low 26°F.
  • Saturday: Cloudy, chance of snow late, high 31°F, low 5°F.
  • Sunday: Frigid, high 13°F, low 0°F.
  • Monday: Partly cloudy, high 28°F.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high near 38°F.
