Louisville, KY – A powerful winter storm is set to bring ice, snow, and hazardous travel conditions to Kentucky and southern Indiana this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch, effective from late Saturday night through Monday afternoon, with accumulations of up to 4 inches of snow and significant ice possible.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain is expected to transition into snow early Sunday. Areas along I-65 and northward may see the most severe impacts, including icy roads, power outages, and dangerous travel conditions. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel and prepare for potential disruptions.

Temperatures will plummet after the storm, with daytime highs remaining below freezing through Friday. Nighttime lows in southern Indiana may dip below zero by Wednesday, especially in areas with lingering snow cover. Canadian high pressure moving into the region will intensify the cold, keeping wind chills dangerously low.

Drivers should exercise extreme caution on roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, where icy spots are more likely to develop. Emergency preparedness kits, including flashlights, blankets, and food supplies, are strongly recommended for anyone traveling or sheltering at home.

Saturday will see a brief respite with sunny skies and highs near 36°F, but conditions will rapidly worsen overnight as the storm arrives. The forecast calls for freezing rain and sleet by early Sunday, turning to snow as temperatures drop further.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local authorities. For real-time information, visit weather.gov or follow @NWSLouisville on social media.
