Louisville, KY – As Kentucky heads into Black Friday weekend, weather officials are urging Louisville-area homeowners to complete winter preparations before another round of freezing nighttime temperatures arrives across Jefferson County.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), La Niña is expected to create more pronounced temperature swings across the Ohio Valley this season. Louisville, Lexington, and Bowling Green may see temperatures drop from mild daytime highs to overnight lows near the upper 20s late Friday into early Saturday. These abrupt shifts can increase the risk of burst pipes, roof ice, and heating system strain across both urban and rural parts of the state.
Home maintenance experts recommend prioritizing critical winterization tasks this week. That includes insulating exposed pipes, particularly in basements, crawl spaces, and exterior walls common in older Louisville homes. Clearing gutters and downspouts is also essential to reduce ice dams that can form as melting water refreezes during early-season cold snaps.
Energy specialists advise residents to seal drafty windows and doors, assess attic insulation, and test HVAC systems before colder December temperatures settle in. Louisville Metro fire officials are also reminding homeowners to check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, noting that heating-related emergencies typically increase immediately after Thanksgiving.
Emergency managers encourage homeowners to check on older neighbors or anyone who may need assistance preparing for the colder nights ahead.
