Kent, WA – A 26-year-old Kent man was taken into custody last week after allegedly taunting police while riding a dirt bike without lights, helmet, or signals, according to the Kent Police Department.

The incident began around 8:56 p.m. on Kent Kangley Road when Sgt. Clay observed the dirt bike traveling in the opposite direction. Police say the rider was recording selfies that included the patrol car behind him before refusing to stop. Due to the risks involved in pursuing motorcycles, officers did not immediately give chase.

According to the King County Sheriff’s Office, their Air Support helicopter “Guardian 1” tracked the suspect from above as he drove recklessly on sidewalks, popped wheelies, and circled police cars in an attempt to provoke officers into a pursuit. Officials say the rider, wearing earplugs, was unaware of the helicopter overhead.

Police report that the man eventually returned to his residence, where he removed his earplugs and noticed the helicopter. He allegedly tried to hide the bike in his garage before fleeing on foot, but officers on the ground moved in and arrested him without incident.

The dirt bike was impounded, and the suspect’s cell phone was seized as evidence. Authorities say he faces charges including Attempting to Elude a Police Vehicle, Reckless Driving, and Driving While License Suspended in the third degree.

“This was a safe and patient plan to get this reckless rider off the road before he hurt someone,” Kent Police stated.
