Plainfield Township, MI – Residents in Kent County were ordered to evacuate Tuesday morning after a gas line rupture near Plainfield Avenue forced emergency crews to block off area streets.

According to the Plainfield Township Fire Department, the leak was reported around 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, when firefighters at nearby Station 3 heard the rupture near Plainfield Avenue and 5 Mile Road. Officials believe contractors working in the area struck a gas line.

Businesses within a half-mile radius of the leak, including the Kent District Library’s Plainfield Township branch, were evacuated. The evacuation zone stretches along Plainfield Avenue from Airway Street NE south to Northville Drive NE, east to SawKaw Drive NE, and west toward the mall.

Kent County Emergency Management sent text alerts advising residents in the area to evacuate. Schools within the zone are sheltering in place as a precaution and are reported safe. Drivers are urged to avoid the area to allow emergency crews access.

The Plainfield Township Fire Department is coordinating with the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, and Rockford Public Safety to secure the area. DTE Energy crews are on scene working to cap the leak.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
