Dover, DE – A Dover man has been arrested after Delaware State Police linked him to an identity theft scheme that began in October in Hartly.

According to Delaware State Police, detectives opened an investigation on October 20, 2025, after residents on the 5700 block of Halltown Road reported that checks placed in their outgoing mailbox had gone missing. The victims told investigators the checks were intact when mailed, but were gone shortly after a suspicious vehicle was seen near the mailbox.

Police said Shore United Bank later flagged attempted payments made with the stolen checks, prompting bank staff to stop the transactions. On October 21, 2025, a male suspect allegedly presented one of the altered checks at the bank’s Milford branch. Bank employees identified the check as fraudulent, declined the transaction, and notified authorities. The suspect allegedly used the victims’ names while identifying himself as Adrian Spence Jr., 48, of Dover.

Through investigation, detectives confirmed Spence Jr. as the suspected individual. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and on December 4, 2025, Dover Police took Spence Jr. into custody while contacting him on an unrelated matter.

Troopers transported him to Troop 3, where he was arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on a $3,500 unsecured bond. Charges include identity theft and forgery, according to police.
