Racine County, WI – A wanted suspect at the center of a Kenosha County shooting investigation was taken into custody this morning in Union Grove after a high-speed pursuit and dual K9 apprehension, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office.
According to investigators, 29-year-old Jake C. Wenzel of Antioch, Illinois—who authorities say has ties to Kenosha County—was wanted on attempted homicide and felon-in-possession charges after he allegedly fired at least two shots at his girlfriend’s sister’s home on Sunday night. Deputies cautioned earlier that Wenzel should be considered armed and dangerous.
This morning, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Racine County Sheriff’s Office after developing information that Wenzel was likely at the Esmond Motel in Union Grove. Racine County deputies, along with SWAT personnel, saturated the area.
Deputies later spotted a vehicle linked to Wenzel leaving the motel. During a high-risk traffic stop near Athletico Physical Therapy, authorities say Wenzel suddenly jumped back into the vehicle as his girlfriend exited, then drove over a large curb and fled.
Deputies relocated him moments later near 58th Road and 67th Drive, leading to a pursuit that reached speeds over 90 mph along 67th Drive and Spring Street/Hwy C. According to deputies, the vehicle’s front tire began shredding, likely damaged from the curb strike.
Wenzel eventually drove into a muddy field near the Ellsworth Correctional Center and attempted to run. Deputies released K9 Simba and K9 Cain, who apprehended him by securing his arm and leg. He was transported to a hospital for injuries and then turned over to Kenosha County authorities for his outstanding warrants. Racine County deputies will submit additional charges of fleeing, eluding, and obstructing.
Sheriff Christopher Schmaling praised the joint response, calling it an example of “extraordinary professionalism” and effective inter-agency cooperation.
