Kenosha County, WI – A predawn crash involving a pickup truck and multiple horses shut down a rural roadway for more than an hour early Sunday, resulting in the deaths of six horses but no injuries to the driver.
According to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 4:14 a.m. Sunday to a motor vehicle crash near the intersection of County Trunk Highway WG and County Trunk Highway MB. Investigators say a pickup truck struck several horses that were standing in the roadway.
Authorities identified the driver as a 67-year-old man from Antioch, Illinois, who was traveling eastbound to work in Kenosha at the time of the crash. He was the sole occupant of a 2004 Ford F-350. Despite significant vehicle damage and full airbag deployment, deputies reported the driver was not injured. The truck was later towed from the scene.
Deputies observed no signs of impairment, and speed is not believed to have been a contributing factor. Officials noted the crash occurred along a dark stretch of rural roadway during low-visibility conditions.
Investigators determined the horses belonged to a local resident and had escaped from a fenced enclosure on the property before entering the roadway. Five horses died at the scene, and a sixth horse was later humanely euthanized due to injuries sustained in the crash. The property reportedly houses approximately 28 horses, and one of the six stables showed fence damage consistent with the animals’ escape.
The roadway was closed for approximately 90 minutes while deputies secured the scene and ensured public safety. Citations related to animals at large remain pending further investigation during daylight hours.
In a statement, Sheriff David W. Zoerner called the incident tragic and reminded motorists to use caution on rural roads, especially during nighttime and early morning hours.
