Morehead City, North Carolina – Torrential downpours are possible across parts of Eastern North Carolina today, with areas from Wallace to Kenansville facing the highest risk of flash flooding due to 2 to 4 inches of rainfall through Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a yellow-outlined swath from Wallace and Kinston eastward to Jacksonville and New Bern could experience intense rainfall rates, leading to minor flash flooding in urban zones, low-lying neighborhoods, and rural drainage basins. Rain chances top 70% in Kenansville and Comfort, with Wallace reaching 76% — the highest in the state.
Drivers along U.S. Route 258, NC-24, and parts of I-40 should expect ponding, reduced visibility, and localized road closures during peak downpours. Emergency management officials urge residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to remain alert for potential advisories later in the day.
The highest rainfall is expected in the morning to mid-afternoon, tapering off toward evening, though residual flooding could persist into early Thursday. Additional weather updates may be issued if rainfall totals exceed forecasts or flash flooding worsens.
