Kearney, NE – A broad stretch of central and south-central Nebraska is under Dense Fog Advisories early Tuesday morning, with visibility dropping to one-quarter mile or less across multiple counties, according to the National Weather Service offices in North Platte and Hastings. Hazardous fog conditions are expected until 7–8 a.m. CST, affecting commuters from Burwell, Broken Bow, and Taylor down through Lexington, Kearney, Holdrege, Grand Island, and surrounding areas.

NWS North Platte reports dense fog in Garfield and Wheeler counties, including the communities of Burwell, Ericson, and Bartlett, where the advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Additional counties impacted include Blaine, Loup, and Custer, covering cities such as Broken Bow, Brewster, Purdum, and Taylor.

Farther south, NWS Hastings has issued a Dense Fog Advisory until 8 a.m. Tuesday for counties including Valley, Greeley, Sherman, Howard, Dawson, Buffalo, Hall, Gosper, Phelps, Kearney, and Adams. Cities such as Kearney, Lexington, Grand Island, Hastings, St. Paul, Holdrege, and Gothenburg may experience rapid changes in visibility, with fog described as “patchy with large variability over short distances.”

Forecasters warn that travel conditions may deteriorate quickly, especially along major routes such as I-80, Highway 30, Highway 281, Highway 92, and US-183. Drivers may encounter sudden pockets of dense fog, making it difficult to see beyond a few hundred feet.

Motorists are urged to slow down, use headlights, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Rural areas, river valleys, and open farmland may see the thickest fog, especially before sunrise.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve after mid-morning as fog lifts and visibility increases.
