Omaha, Nebraska – Nebraskans should prepare for slick roads by late Sunday as a developing winter system brings its first round of snow Sunday night, March 1st, with additional impacts lingering into Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a 20 to 40 percent chance of impactful winter precipitation will spread across the region Sunday through Tuesday. The initial wave Sunday into Sunday night, March 1st, favors mostly snow across eastern and central Nebraska, including Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk and Grand Island. I-80, Highway 77 and secondary roads could become snow-covered overnight, affecting the Monday morning commute.
In western Iowa, including Sioux City, Council Bluffs and areas along I-29, snow is also likely Sunday night, March 1st. Reduced visibility and light accumulations may create slick bridges and overpasses before sunrise Monday.
Northeast Kansas, including Topeka, and northwest Missouri, including Kansas City and St. Joseph, face a March 1st Sunday night snow risk as well, though totals may be lighter initially. A second round Monday afternoon into Tuesday could introduce a rain-snow mix, especially south of I-70, prolonging slushy and wet travel conditions.
Residents in all four states should check state DOT road reports, limit non-essential travel during periods of steady snow and prepare for changing conditions through Tuesday. Additional advisories may be issued as the system strengthens heading into the weekend.
