Dodge City, KS – The National Weather Service in Dodge City is reminding Kansans to prepare their homes for winter weather as the region faces an increased risk of storms and extreme cold.
Officials say residents should have enough non-perishable food, water, and medications for at least three days, along with warm clothing, blankets, and a fully charged phone in case power or communication lines are disrupted. The agency also recommends keeping an updated first-aid kit and ensuring that wireless emergency alerts are active on mobile devices.
Winter storms can knock out power and make roads impassable for days, particularly in rural parts of western Kansas. The NWS urges residents to take precautions now—before temperatures drop or snow begins to fall—to stay safe and self-sufficient during prolonged outages.
“Preparedness is key,” meteorologists said. “Even a short-duration winter storm can cause extended travel delays and power disruptions.”
