Kansas — A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across parts of central Kansas until midnight CST Friday, with accumulating snow expected to create hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, snowfall totals of up to 3 inches are forecast in Barton, Rice, Reno, and Kingman counties. Ellsworth and McPherson counties are expected to receive up to 2 inches of snow. The advisory covers communities including Great Bend, Hutchinson, Lyons, Sterling, Kingman, McPherson, Wilson, and Ellsworth.

Forecasters warned that roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and dangerous as snow accumulates. The hazardous conditions are expected to impact the Friday evening commute, when traffic volumes are higher and temperatures remain cold.

The National Weather Service emphasized that even modest snowfall can quickly lead to reduced traction and increased stopping distances. Sidewalks, driveways, and stairs may also become icy, raising the risk of slips and falls for pedestrians.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra distance between vehicles, and use caution if travel is necessary. Officials recommend checking the latest road conditions by calling 5-1-1 before heading out.

Winter Weather Advisories are issued when snow is expected to cause significant travel disruptions but does not meet warning-level criteria. Conditions are expected to gradually improve overnight as snowfall tapers off.

Residents should continue monitoring National Weather Service updates and local advisories in case conditions change or the advisory is extended.
