Wichita, KS – A winter storm watch is in effect for south-central and southeast Kansas, bringing up to six inches of snow through Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service warns of hazardous travel conditions, with snow intensifying overnight into the morning commute.
According to the NWS, snow will begin late Tuesday evening, increasing in intensity after midnight. Wichita and surrounding areas, including Newton, El Dorado, and Augusta, could see total snow accumulations between three and six inches. Wind gusts up to 28 mph may further reduce visibility.
Wednesday morning and evening commutes could be dangerous due to icy roads and reduced visibility. Drivers should exercise caution, allow extra travel time, and check road conditions before heading out. The Kansas Department of Transportation advises avoiding unnecessary travel on I-70 and other major routes.
Beyond Wednesday, bitterly cold wind chills as low as -15°F will persist into Thursday morning. By Friday, conditions will improve slightly, but another system may bring additional snow late Friday into Saturday.
Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and prepare for winter travel delays.
