Kansas – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across a large portion of the state as additional heavy snowfall is expected to continue through the weekend, creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, portions of central, south-central, and southeast Kansas could see an additional 5 to 9 inches of snow before the warning expires at noon CST Sunday. The warning includes major population centers such as Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, Newton, El Dorado, Winfield, Arkansas City, Coffeyville, and Parsons, along with dozens of surrounding communities.
Forecasters warn that roads may remain snow-covered and slick, with travel becoming very difficult at times, particularly during periods of heavier snowfall. Hazardous conditions could also impact the Friday evening commute, as snow continues to accumulate.
With cold temperatures expected to persist, snow removal may be slow, and untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to remain icy through the weekend. Officials urge motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and allow extra time if travel cannot be postponed.
Those who must be on the roads are advised to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight. Travelers are encouraged to check the latest road conditions by calling 511 before departing.
