Wichita, Kansas – A wide swath of central and eastern Kansas faces the threat of damaging storms through midnight Sunday, with wind gusts over 70 mph and hail larger than quarters possible in multiple counties.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch (No. 290) remains in effect until 12:00 a.m. CDT Monday. The watch includes 30 counties, stretching from Salina and Emporia to Manhattan and Phillipsburg, as instability builds along a warm front moving north.

Cities like McPherson, Junction City, and El Dorado could see fast-moving storms capable of downing trees, damaging roofs, and knocking out power. Emergency managers recommend securing outdoor items, charging phones, and staying indoors once warnings are issued.

Interstate corridors I-70 and I-135 could experience brief closures or dangerous driving conditions due to sudden wind shifts and blinding rain. While tornadoes are not the main concern, isolated rotation can’t be ruled out.

The threat is expected to diminish after midnight, but additional alerts may follow if storm cells redevelop. Stay tuned to local media and NOAA Weather Radio for real-time updates.
