Overland Park, Kansas – Dry air and gusty winds are creating a dangerous fire environment across eastern Kansas Friday, with conditions expected to remain critical again Saturday as the region faces back-to-back Red Flag Warnings.

Grass, brush and open fields across much of the state’s eastern tier could ignite easily and spread rapidly as humidity levels plunge and winds strengthen through the afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, sustained winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph will combine with relative humidity dropping as low as 15 to 25 percent through 8 p.m. Friday. These conditions significantly increase the risk of fast-moving grass fires.

The warning covers Atchison, Doniphan, Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson, Miami and Linn counties, including major population centers such as Kansas City, Kansas, Overland Park, Olathe and Leavenworth.

Emergency officials strongly discourage any outdoor burning, including brush piles, agricultural burns and campfires. Even sparks from machinery, trailer chains dragging on pavement or discarded cigarettes could ignite dry grasses.

The threat will return Saturday from noon until 8 p.m., when winds shift to the south but remain strong around 20 mph with gusts near 25 mph while humidity again drops into the teens and lower 20s.

Residents are urged to secure equipment, avoid activities that produce sparks and report smoke immediately. Additional fire weather alerts could be issued if dry conditions persist into the weekend.
