Wichita, Kansas – Scattered thunderstorms and mid-90s heat are making an early return to Kansas this week, with central cities including Wichita, Hutchinson, and Salina bracing for strong storms and sweltering afternoons through Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, recent rainfall has temporarily cooled temperatures, but highs will surge into the low to upper 90s across much of central and southern Kansas today. Showers will taper off after sunrise, but the next round of storms is expected to develop late Wednesday, bringing the best chances for severe weather across central Kansas—including Winfield, Emporia, and Chanute—by Wednesday night and into Thursday.

Residents in Wichita and surrounding areas can expect highs near 95°F each afternoon, with the possibility of heavy downpours, lightning, and gusty winds. The NWS recommends avoiding travel during severe storms, securing outdoor items, and staying updated on local alerts. Those in rural areas and along I-35 should remain especially cautious.

Looking ahead, drier and sunnier weather is forecast by Friday, but more storms could return over the weekend. Kansans are urged to monitor updates as new advisories may be issued.

Five Day Outlook for Wichita & Central Kansas:

  • Tuesday: Partly sunny, stray showers early, highs 92–95°F
  • Wednesday: Scattered thunderstorms late, highs 95–99°F
  • Thursday: Storms possible, highs 93–96°F
  • Friday: Mostly sunny, highs 92–96°F
  • Saturday: Storm chances return, highs near 95°F
