WICHITA, Kan. – Frost glitters across lawns and car hoods this morning as temperatures dip to their lowest of the season. The chill won’t linger long — sunshine and a steady south breeze will help warm Kansas fields and neighborhoods by late morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a Freeze Warning remains in effect through 8 a.m. for much of south-central and southeast Kansas. Morning lows fell into the upper 20s and low 30s, cold enough to damage unprotected pipes, crops, and garden plants. Residents are urged to cover sensitive vegetation and let faucets drip to prevent plumbing damage.

The cold spell marks the official end of the growing season for most of the region. By midday, skies turn bright and calm with highs near 61°F. Winds shift from light northerly to southerly later in the day, signaling a pronounced warm-up into early next week.

Monday and Tuesday bring highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s as La Niña–influenced ridging builds over the Plains. South winds increase to 15–20 mph, occasionally gusting to 25 mph. Farmers and ranchers should prepare for drier soil conditions by midweek as humidity levels fall again.

No rain or snow is expected through Friday, but models hint that colder air could return to Kansas closer to mid-November. For now, the state enjoys a classic late-fall rebound — a frosty dawn giving way to crisp, brilliant days ideal for cleanup, travel, and early holiday prep.
