WICHITA, Kansas – With Thanksgiving travel just around the corner, Kansas transportation officials are urging drivers to prepare vehicles now for the challenges of winter weather and heavy holiday traffic. From Wichita to Topeka, motorists are being reminded that early maintenance and a stocked emergency kit can prevent roadside trouble once snow and ice return later this month.
According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, November is the best time to inspect tires, check antifreeze, test batteries, and replace wiper blades. Every vehicle should also carry a winter emergency kit — including blankets, a flashlight, jumper cables, bottled water, snacks, and traction aids such as sand or kitty litter.
Motorists traveling on I-70, I-35, and U.S. 54 during the Thanksgiving rush should plan for long distances between service areas and rapidly changing conditions across open plains. “Weather can shift quickly in Kansas — especially with wind and ice,” a KDOT spokesperson said. “A few minutes of preparation before travel keeps families safe and trips on schedule.” Drivers are also urged to keep gas tanks at least half full, dress warmly, and check KanDrive.gov for live traffic, construction, and plow updates.
As holiday travel increases statewide, officials emphasize that early vehicle prep and safe driving habits will help ensure smooth, reliable travel across Kansas as winter driving season begins.
