Wichita, Kansas – Drivers in south-central Kansas could face slick roads and sudden downpours early Wednesday as thunderstorms return to the Wichita area. Gusty winds and low visibility may impact morning commutes along I-135 and surrounding routes between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, there’s a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms developing late Wednesday morning. While not widespread, any storm cells could bring brief but intense rainfall, especially in Sedgwick County. Winds will pick up out of the south around 10 mph, with gusts over 20 mph expected.

After the storms, heat returns fast. Highs jump to 89°F by Thursday and top out near 90°F Friday through Sunday. Overnight lows will remain warm, hovering in the upper 60s to low 70s, limiting overnight cooling and keeping humidity levels uncomfortable.

Residents should plan for rapid weather changes this week—light layers and charged devices are smart midweek, followed by sunscreen and hydration heading into the weekend. Outdoor workers and anyone spending extended time outside Friday or Saturday should watch for signs of heat fatigue, especially in the afternoon.

While storm chances taper off after Wednesday, isolated showers could pop up Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Winds remain variable but won’t exceed 15 mph heading into next week.
