WICHITA, Kan. – Drivers across Kansas could face slick roads and heavy downpours by Monday morning as storms intensify across the region. Some of the stronger cells may bring small hail and strong wind gusts, raising travel risks on I-35 and other major routes.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms will continue to build Saturday night into Sunday across central and southeast Kansas. The most widespread activity is expected late Sunday into Monday, when showers and thunderstorms could produce locally heavy rainfall. Wichita and surrounding counties remain at risk for repeated rounds of storms through at least Tuesday.
Residents should plan for sudden changes in road conditions, especially during morning and evening commutes. Keep phones charged in case of outages and avoid driving through standing water. Winds may increase during storms, with gusts topping 30 mph.
Sunday offers a 50 percent chance of storms, with highs in the upper 70s. By Monday, stronger storms are likely, with showers continuing into Tuesday. While no widespread flooding is forecast yet, repeated rainfall could create localized problems.
Spotter activation is not anticipated Saturday night, but officials warn that conditions could change quickly. More advisories may be issued as the pattern evolves into next week.
