Wichita, Kansas – Dangerous heat is set to grip south-central Kansas starting Friday, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the upper 90s and heat indices exceeding 105 degrees. The hottest stretch will hit during the afternoon and early evening hours, posing risks for heat-related illness if precautions aren’t taken.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the heat will intensify Friday and persist through at least Wednesday. Residents across Sedgwick, Butler, Reno, and surrounding counties should limit outdoor activity during peak hours, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

While Friday and Saturday will remain dry under mostly sunny skies, thunderstorm chances return late Sunday night and continue intermittently into midweek. These storms could bring brief relief from the heat but also create lightning and wind hazards for evening activities.

Drivers are urged to keep vehicles stocked with water and avoid leaving children or pets inside, even for short periods. Outdoor workers should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Heat advisories could be issued as early as Friday morning, with updates expected from the NWS if conditions worsen.
