Wichita, KS – Dry air, rising spring temperatures, and gusty winds are setting up dangerous fire conditions across Wichita and surrounding areas through Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, breezy southwesterly winds and low humidity are creating a very high grassland fire danger, particularly along major corridors like I-135 and U.S. 54. Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning and remain vigilant about any activity that might spark a fire.

Wednesday brings a high of 74°F with strong afternoon winds between 16 to 18 mph. Overnight, a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms develops after 1 a.m. Thursday, potentially reducing fire risk but increasing storm hazards. Winds are forecast to continue Thursday with gusts up to 30 mph, raising concerns for rapid fire spread.

By Thursday, highs rise to 82°F with mostly sunny skies and continued breezy conditions. Friday will follow with a high near 80°F and partly cloudy skies. While weekend temperatures remain mild, rain chances slightly increase with a 30 percent chance of showers Saturday and Sunday.

Looking ahead to early next week, Monday will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 50s. While spring is in full swing, the week ahead will see a mix of fire risk, dry heat, and possible storms.
