Wichita, Kan. – Thunderstorm chances will ramp up across Kansas this weekend, with the most widespread activity expected by Sunday evening and night. The National Weather Service in Wichita warns that strong wind gusts and pockets of heavy rainfall could create hazardous conditions, especially in the eastern half of the state.

According to the National Weather Service, storm chances will remain low Saturday evening, with most areas seeing less than a 20% risk. By Sunday evening, however, probabilities jump to over 60% in cities like Topeka, Salina, and Russell, with Wichita’s odds climbing near 50%.

Travelers on I-70 and I-35 should prepare for reduced visibility, slick roads, and sudden gusts that may make driving difficult. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and ensure mobile devices are fully charged in case of localized power outages.

Storm activity is expected to diminish overnight into early Monday, but additional unsettled weather could follow early next week. The weather service advises monitoring updates through Sunday.
