Wichita, Kansas – Severe summer weather could shake up weekend plans across south-central Kansas, with storms brewing just in time for Sunday night. Wichita residents should brace for gusty winds, heavy downpours, and lightning as conditions intensify late in the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, strong thunderstorms are expected to develop across southeast and southern Kansas starting late Sunday night into early Monday. Areas like Cow Creek near Hutchinson remain at risk for flooding, especially where heavy rain overlaps with already saturated ground. Storm chances ramp up late Sunday and may continue off and on into Monday afternoon.

Saturday looks mostly dry but hot, with highs reaching 92°F under mostly sunny skies. That heat will help fuel instability leading into Sunday night’s storm chances. Winds could gust over 40 mph during storm activity. While Saturday travel along major routes like U.S. Route 50 should be unaffected, drivers are urged to stay weather-aware heading into Sunday night and Monday morning.

Storms may be less frequent Tuesday, but isolated rain and thunder chances will linger into the middle of next week — just ahead of the July 4th holiday.
