Wichita, Kansas – Isolated thunderstorms could interrupt Tuesday evening plans across central and south-central Kansas, with the heaviest pockets of rain capable of causing brief, localized flooding. The National Weather Service warns that while not everyone will see storms, those who do may experience heavy downpours through late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a 30 percent chance of storms exists for the metro area, mainly after 3 p.m. Tuesday. Showers are most likely to develop in Reno, Sedgwick, Butler, and Cowley counties, before tapering off overnight. Winds will remain light, but sudden heavy rain could reduce visibility on roads and create ponding in low-lying areas.
The bigger story comes later this week as dangerous heat returns Thursday, with highs climbing into the upper 90s and heat indices reaching triple digits through the weekend. Residents should limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
Storm chances may reappear Sunday night into Monday, but the primary concern until then will be the prolonged heat.
