Wichita, Kansas – Tennis ball-size hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes could slam parts of central and southern Kansas this afternoon in a fast-building storm system focused east of I-135.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, severe storms are likely from late Monday afternoon through early evening, especially along and east of Interstate 135, stretching from Salina to Wichita to Winfield. These storms may bring hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter, 60+ mph wind gusts, and brief tornadoes. Spotter activation is expected, and residents are urged to secure outdoor items and stay alert for warnings.
Cities including Hutchinson, McPherson, and El Dorado could see the strongest impacts. Travel along I-135 may become hazardous during the evening rush due to hail or debris. Power outages are also possible. If you don’t need to travel late Monday, stay off roads east of I-135 after 3 p.m.
Tuesday, May 20, brings a drastic change. Wichita and surrounding areas will enjoy dry, sunny skies with a high near 76°F and breezy northwest winds. The calm continues through midweek, with sunny conditions and highs in the mid-70s through Thursday.
Rain returns Thursday night into Friday, with a 50% chance of thunderstorms Friday into the weekend. Saturday and Sunday both carry additional storm chances and highs near 80°F—classic early summer volatility.
