Dodge City, Kan. – Southwest Kansas residents should brace for severe thunderstorms late Wednesday afternoon, bringing hail, strong winds, and heavy downpours during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the highest risk period will be between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., when storms are most likely to produce damaging winds and quarter-size hail. While tornado risk remains low, forecasters warn of sudden, fast-moving cells capable of creating localized flooding and hazardous travel.

Communities from Dodge City to Hutchinson and Great Bend fall within the threat zone. Drivers along U.S. Highways 50 and 283 may encounter reduced visibility, slick conditions, and debris on roadways. Emergency officials urge residents to secure outdoor furniture and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.

Storms may weaken overnight, but forecasters caution additional watches or warnings could be issued if conditions worsen.
