Wichita, KS – Strong to severe thunderstorms are forecast to impact much of south-central and southeastern Kansas this afternoon and evening, with Wichita and surrounding areas under heightened risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the storms are expected to develop Thursday, April 24, primarily during the late afternoon and evening hours. Quarter-sized hail, damaging wind gusts reaching 60 mph, and locally heavy rainfall are the main threats.
Much of central Kansas, including Reno, Harvey, Butler, and Sedgwick counties, falls under a Level 2 (Slight Risk) zone for severe weather. Surrounding areas, such as Salina and Emporia, are in a marginal risk zone, where isolated severe activity is still possible.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor local weather alerts, and remain indoors during severe weather. Travel could be affected by sudden downpours and wind-blown debris. Power outages may occur in localized areas due to wind or falling branches.
This event is typical for springtime in Kansas, but officials stress the importance of preparedness. The National Weather Service recommends keeping flashlights, emergency kits, and weather radios handy through the night.
Storm activity is expected to diminish gradually after midnight, though isolated showers may linger into early Friday.
