Wichita, Kan. – Outdoor plans and evening travel across eastern Kansas could be disrupted within days as another round of strong thunderstorms builds into the region Friday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop Friday afternoon and continue into the evening, mainly impacting the eastern half of the state. Some storms could become severe, producing heavy rainfall and increasing the risk for localized flooding.
Cities including Wichita, Emporia, and El Dorado sit in the zone most likely to see repeated rounds of storms. Corridors such as I-35 and U.S. 54 may experience reduced visibility and water-covered roads during heavier downpours, especially during peak travel hours.
Rainfall rates could overwhelm drainage in low-lying areas, leading to brief street flooding. Residents are urged to monitor weather updates, avoid driving through flooded roadways, and secure outdoor items ahead of potential strong winds.
Storm chances will taper later Friday night, but additional updates are expected as confidence in storm strength and placement increases.
