Wichita, Kansas – Storms are expected to hammer Wichita Friday evening, kicking off a potentially soggy Memorial Day weekend for south-central Kansas.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a 50 to 80 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms will move in Friday afternoon and evening, with gusts reaching 22 mph during the day and 24 mph overnight. Areas along I-135 and I-35 could see slick roads by Friday night, especially during heavier downpours. Memorial Day travelers should check conditions before heading out.

Rain continues Saturday with a 70 percent chance of storms. Sunday brings scattered showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms after 1 a.m., followed by another round of rain throughout the day. Gusty winds near 25 mph could accompany these storms, creating additional hazards for weekend plans and travel.

Temperatures will hover in the low 70s Friday and Saturday before climbing into the mid-70s Sunday. Memorial Day itself looks drier, with only a 20 percent chance of early showers and highs near 65°F — cooler than normal for late May.

By midweek, conditions improve. Monday night will be calm with lows around 50°F, and Tuesday will be mostly sunny with highs near 70°F. Wednesday continues the warming trend with partly sunny skies and a high of 74°F.

Stay weather-aware this holiday weekend and avoid flooded roads. More updates are expected as Friday storms develop.
