Wichita, Kansas – Snow is spreading across central and south-central Kansas this morning, creating slick roads and slowing travel from Salina to Wichita as higher snowfall rates develop during the early commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, with 1 to 4 inches expected. The heaviest totals are likely north of Highway 50, affecting communities such as Russell, Lincoln, Great Bend, and Salina. Early-morning bursts of snow are already reducing visibility and coating roadways.
Drivers along I-135, U.S. 50, and K-96 should expect quick deterioration on untreated stretches, especially during the morning hours when the most persistent bands move through. Cities including Hutchinson, Newton, McPherson, El Dorado, and Wichita may see compacted snow develop on bridges and overpasses shortly after sunrise.
Kansas transportation officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time for the drive. Road temperatures remain cold enough for accumulation, and plow crews will be working to improve conditions through the afternoon.
Snow will taper gradually later today, with travel improving by early evening. The advisory stays in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, and lingering slick spots may continue into the early nighttime hours.
