Topeka, Kansas – Slippery roads could slow drivers across northeast and central Kansas beginning Sunday afternoon, with light snow and a thin glaze of ice threatening the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at noon Sunday and remains in place until 9 a.m. Monday for much of central, north central and northeast Kansas. Forecasters expect mixed precipitation, with up to one inch of combined snow and sleet and a light glaze of ice.
Even minor icing can create hazardous travel, especially on bridges and overpasses. Roads in Topeka, Manhattan, Junction City, Abilene and Marysville may turn slick by late Sunday evening as temperatures hover near freezing. Areas including Shawnee, Riley, Pottawatomie and Geary counties could see patchy ice develop overnight.
The Kansas Department of Transportation urges drivers to slow down and allow extra stopping distance. Motorists can check updated road conditions by calling 511. Officials recommend avoiding unnecessary travel late Sunday night and early Monday, and keeping emergency supplies in vehicles.
Conditions should gradually improve after mid-morning Monday as temperatures rise, but additional advisories remain possible if icing becomes more widespread.
