Goodland, Kansas – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from midday Friday through late Saturday night for portions of northwest and west-central Kansas, where accumulating snow is expected to create hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, snowfall totals of 3 to 5 inches are expected across Rawlins, Decatur, Norton, Sherman, Thomas, Sheridan, Wallace, Logan, Greeley, and Wichita counties. Cheyenne County is forecast to receive 2 to 4 inches. The advisory includes communities such as Goodland, Colby, Oakley, Norton, Oberlin, Hoxie, Sharon Springs, Tribune, and St. Francis.
Forecasters say the most favorable window for accumulating snowfall will be from mid-afternoon Friday through early Saturday morning, when road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly. Roads—especially bridges and overpasses—are likely to become slick and hazardous.
Travel impacts are expected to be most significant during the Friday evening commute and overnight hours. Officials warn that Interstate 70 travelers should expect delays and difficult driving conditions, particularly during periods of steady snowfall.
While winds are not expected to be extreme, even moderate snowfall may create dangerous driving conditions across open rural highways. Residents are urged not to rely on GPS for alternate routes and to avoid driving around road barricades.
Motorists should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and ensure vehicles are winterized. Drivers can check the latest road conditions in Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado by calling 511.
Communities across western Kansas should prepare for prolonged winter driving conditions through late Saturday night.
