Wichita, KS – A volatile weather pattern is expected to unfold across central and eastern Kansas Tuesday evening, as severe storms are forecast to develop after 6 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, isolated thunderstorms may form along a dry line early Tuesday evening, with broader storm coverage anticipated later as a strong cold front pushes through the region. The greatest threat will stretch from Emporia to Hutchinson and Wichita, where conditions favor large hail, damaging winds, and the potential for isolated tornadoes.
Storm intensity is expected to increase into the night hours, posing risks for travelers and residents in Russell, Salina, and Winfield as well. The NWS has placed much of the state under a Level 2 (Slight) risk for severe weather.
Wind gusts on Tuesday could exceed 40 mph even outside of storm activity, making it hazardous for high-profile vehicles. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and remain weather-aware throughout the evening.
Temperatures will climb into the mid-70s Tuesday before dropping sharply overnight as storms move through. Those in mobile homes or temporary structures should review safety plans in advance. Watches or warnings may be issued with little lead time Tuesday evening.
