Dodge City, Kan. – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to roll into western Kansas between 5 and 9 p.m. Sunday, bringing the potential for damaging winds, hail, and brief bursts of heavy rainfall.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the highest local risk zone stretches from Goodland to Dodge City and includes Garden City and Liberal. A Level 2 “Slight Risk” designation has been issued, with wind gusts over 60 mph and quarter-sized hail the primary threats.
Communities across southwest Kansas—including Ford, Finney, Seward, and Gray counties—should prepare for sudden weather changes during evening travel hours. Emergency managers urge residents to secure loose outdoor items and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts.
Drivers are advised to use caution on highways such as US-50, US-83, and US-283, as visibility may quickly drop in heavy rain. While tornadoes are not expected, brief localized flooding may occur in low-lying areas.
Storm activity is forecast to taper off after 9 p.m., though additional updates or warnings may be issued if conditions change rapidly.
