Wichita, KS – A round of isolated to scattered storms is forecast to develop across central and eastern Kansas after 6 p.m. Wednesday, potentially bringing damaging winds and hail to the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms will mainly impact areas including Hutchinson, Salina, Emporia, and Wichita. The strongest storms may produce wind gusts up to 50 mph and hail ranging in size from dimes to quarters. The threat of severe weather remains at a low level but could cause localized disruption, especially for evening commuters and outdoor activities.
In addition to the storms, dangerous fire conditions are expected Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. due to very low humidity and southwest winds gusting up to 45 mph. Areas at highest risk for wildfires include Great Bend, Medicine Lodge, and Salina, where outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
Record-breaking heat is also forecast Thursday, with temperatures soaring into the mid-90s across much of Kansas. Cities like Manhattan, Emporia, and Wichita could see highs near 94°F, well above seasonal averages.
Residents are advised to stay weather-aware, secure loose outdoor items, avoid open flames, and monitor local alerts for real-time updates.
