DODGE CITY, Kan. – Residents across western and southwest Kansas should prepare for a stretch of unsettled weather as strong thunderstorms threaten the region tonight and into Sunday. Forecasters warn of damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall that could disrupt evening travel and outdoor plans.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms will develop late Saturday near the Colorado border, with gusts up to 60 mph and locally heavy rainfall. The risk shifts eastward Sunday, bringing a marginal chance of severe storms across southwest Kansas, including Dodge City, Garden City, and Liberal.
By Sunday afternoon, conditions could intensify with hail up to golf-ball size, frequent lightning, and wind gusts strong enough to down tree limbs and cause minor power outages. Drivers are urged to remain cautious, especially on U.S. Highways 50 and 83, where reduced visibility from heavy downpours is possible.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm periods, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Additional warnings could be issued if storms strengthen further.
