Wichita, Kansas – Thunderstorms are expected to develop within hours across central Kansas, with some storms turning strong to severe by late evening and continuing overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, rain chances are already increasing this afternoon, with storm coverage expanding after sunset. Areas including Russell (61%), Salina (59%), and Great Bend (55%) face the highest early storm chances, with activity spreading toward Wichita and Hutchinson later tonight.

A few storms may produce damaging wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to nickel size, especially through the evening hours. While tornado risk remains low, it cannot be completely ruled out as the pattern becomes more active.

Temperatures will reach the mid to upper 70s today before storms move in. The unsettled pattern continues Thursday through the weekend, with additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms likely each day.

Heavy rainfall from repeated storms could lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions.

Storm chances persist into early next week, and additional watches or warnings may be issued as confidence in severe impacts increases.
