Wichita, KS – Severe weather could begin impacting central Kansas within the next 24 to 36 hours, with the first round of storms expected to develop late Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, isolated storms may begin after sunset Wednesday, with a more active pattern setting up Thursday through Sunday. Some storms could turn severe, producing large hail, damaging wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, and a few tornadoes.

Cities including Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, and Winfield will see increasing storm chances each day, with the highest coverage expected Friday through the weekend. High temperatures will remain mild ahead of the storms, ranging from the low 70s Wednesday to upper 70s Thursday before fluctuating with cloud cover and rain.

Heavy rainfall is also a concern, as multiple rounds of storms could lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Roads such as I-35, I-135, and US-54 may see reduced visibility and water-covered sections during heavier downpours.

Residents should prepare now by reviewing severe weather plans, ensuring alerts are enabled, and avoiding flooded roadways. Additional watches and warnings are likely as storm timing and severity become clearer.
