Wichita, Kansas – Any spark across far southern and southeast Kansas could explode into a fast-moving grass fire before 8 p.m. Thursday as strong winds and bone-dry air grip the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. CST for Allen, Harper, Sumner, Cowley, Elk, Wilson, Neosho, Chautauqua, Montgomery and Labette counties. Northwest winds are sustained at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph. Relative humidity has dropped as low as 22 percent, creating extreme grassland fire danger.

Across the Flint Hills and into communities like Arkansas City, Independence and Parsons, dormant winter grasses provide ample fuel. With fields still dry and little recent rainfall, even roadside sparks, controlled burns or equipment use could trigger flames that spread rapidly and change direction without warning.

Emergency managers urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and postpone activities that could produce sparks. Farmers and ranchers should secure chains, check machinery and keep water tanks nearby. Drivers towing trailers are encouraged to ensure safety chains do not drag along highways such as U.S. 166 or U.S. 400.

The combination of wind and low humidity will persist through early evening before conditions gradually ease after sunset. Additional fire weather alerts could be issued if dry and windy conditions continue into Friday.
