Wichita, Kansas – Thunderstorms rolled across south-central Kansas Saturday morning, dumping more than 2.8 inches of rain in Derby and soaking communities across Sedgwick and Butler counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms intensified before 4 p.m., bringing widespread rainfall totals above one inch. Rose Hill recorded 2.62 inches, while Mulvane and Augusta saw 2.14 and 1.69 inches respectively. Wichita Eisenhower Airport registered 1.15 inches.
The downpour led to brief street flooding in low-lying areas and saturated fields across the region. Cities including Winfield, Hutchinson, and Coffeyville also reported steady rain as the storm system pushed northeast. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and monitor for hydroplaning risks on highways like I-35 and US-400.
While no severe storm warnings were active by late afternoon, cloud formations captured near Wichita hinted at the dramatic energy in the atmosphere. Residents are encouraged to keep devices charged and stay tuned to local emergency alerts in case of additional rounds of storms into the evening.
Storm chances taper off overnight, but a chance for scattered showers lingers into Sunday.
